Equity-Based Strategies for Recruiting and Retaining Students of Color in Gifted Education

In the United States, Black, Hispanic, and Native American students are under-represented in gifted education. The demographics of gifted education are shared nationally, along with a summary of state-by-state data by Ford and colleagues. To address this issue of access and opportunity for such students of colour, the presenter argues that recruitment and retention efforts must be grounded in equity. Equity-based recruitment and retention strategies are shared, along with a method for quantifying equity in order to set representation goals. This mini-workshop will allow participants to examine their own gifted education data, and apply the equity formula that sets representation goals.
